On May 5, 1966, Tulsa hosted the St. Louis Cardinals for an exhibition game at the University of Tulsa’s football field, Skelly Stadium. It was Tulsa’s first year of Triple A and Oiler owner A. Ray Smith spent $16,500 for rent and baseball improvements to the field. A large backstop was set-up in the west corner of the north end zone.

Because of the short right field foul line of 208 feet a screen was set up in right field. 18,904 fans saw the Cardinals beat Tulsa 5–4. The attendance is still the record for a baseball game in the state of Oklahoma.
